build: support tvOS, macOS, and Mac Catalyst apps - #362
Select deployment settings and bundle layout from the requested iOS, tvOS, macOS, or Mac Catalyst triple. Desktop apps and extensions use the standard Contents layout. Device families, framework search paths, resource locations, and effective deployment minimums follow the selected platform.
The Darwin SDK builder retains available Apple TV SDKs, skips optional Apple TV directories without a versioned SDK, adds Catalyst target definitions, and records the actual Xcode and SDK metadata. Builds stamp the SDK version and platform into Mach-O headers while preserving the effective deployment minimum. SDK epoch 5 makes existing installations rebuild with these definitions and cross-import overlay settings.
Linux Catalyst builds can select an updated linker through XTOOL_LD64_LLD; current SDK arm64e reexports require LLD 23 or newer. SwiftBuild is selected automatically with Swift 6.4 or newer. Native SwiftPM desktop builds reject Swift package resource bundles before compilation because their generated Bundle.module lookup is incompatible with Contents/Resources. Desktop apps with only root resources remain supported.
Entitlements use upstream RCodesign ad hoc signing with the selected platform's app and extension paths. Automatic development signing remains limited to iOS.
This does not add an Xcode project importer, asset compiler, or App Store distribution workflow.
How was it tested?
On the merged tree, XTL_CI=1 swift build --build-system native --jobs 4 --product xtool, XTL_CI=1 swift test --build-system native --jobs 4, the built CLI, and make lint SWIFTLINT_FLAGS=--strict passed in a Swift 6.4.0 Linux development container.
Earlier validation built and installed a fresh Darwin SDK from the real Xcode 27.1 archive using the PR code. Checked the SDK epoch, platform targets, macro-plugin links, and recorded Xcode/SDK metadata.
Earlier validation built SwiftUI Release smoke apps for iOS, tvOS, macOS, and ARM64/Intel Catalyst with that SDK. They include a package resource and, for iOS/Catalyst, a PhotosPicker cross-import overlay.
Inspected Mach-O platform, minimum OS, and SDK fields, Info.plist metadata, desktop bundle layout, and packaged resource bytes. Real-SDK CLI builds also passed for versioned tvOS and the versioned macos alias.
On the merged tree, rebuilt ARM64 Release smoke apps and extensions for iOS, tvOS, macOS, and Catalyst using the previously built real SDK. Extracted the signed entitlements and verified separate app and extension values, including desktop Contents/PlugIns paths. These builds include package resources and exercise the versioned macos alias.
After the SDK edge-case fixes, reran the native Linux build, full test suite, and strict lint. A focused optional-TV regression failed before the fix and passed afterward. Real-SDK status and JSON metadata checks passed for versioned iOS, tvOS Simulator, macOS aliases, and Catalyst targets.
Unit coverage includes unsupported triples, normalized SDK selectors, optional SDK discovery, linker overrides, native deployment toolsets, desktop package-resource rejection, and platform-specific app/extension packaging.
Native macOS/Apple-device execution, signing with a development or distribution identity, tvOS asset compilation, and App Store processing remain unverified. Xcode-dependent validation could not run because XTL_TEST_XCODE_APP is not configured.
Hosted Build, SwiftLint, and Integration runs on e3c6153 require repository administrator approval (action_required). Their jobs have not started. CodeRabbit skipped the final-head review with Review paused; its earlier SDK findings are fixed.

Walkthrough
The change adds support for iOS, tvOS, macOS, and Mac Catalyst targets. It adds SDK discovery and metadata handling, platform-specific deployment and bundle settings, linker configuration, command validation, and related tests and documentation.

Platform parsing and deployment-target calculation now cover supported Apple targets. SDK-root resolution and SDK build-metadata lookup are added with tests.
Build settings normalize target triples, add platform SDK options, and apply linker toolsets. SDK construction adds Apple TV and Catalyst targets. SDK status can resolve target SDKs and print build metadata.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review bf4f0
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: SDK creation can fail for empty optional AppleTV SDK directories, and SDK status can incorrectly reject versioned target triples. Fixing these localized cases would improve installation and diagnostic reliability.

Linux tests, the product build, and lint passed locally. Hosted macOS, iOS, and integration validation has not run.
Fresh Linux validation of the simulator linker fix on a444f0d9cc77d72a3c894287dd3a22b463b4a628, with Swift 6.4.0 and LLD 23.1.3:
Real ARM64 iOS and tvOS simulator objects fail to link with ios-sim and tvos-sim (malformed platform). Both link successfully with ios-simulator and tvos-simulator.
The existing simulator platform regression, full Linux test suite, and make lint passed. The Xcode-dependent test remains unexecuted on Linux.
Rebuilt a slim Darwin SDK from a local Xcode 27.1 archive using this head, then built a downstream SwiftUI app with xtool dev build --configuration debug --triple arm64-apple-ios-simulator. The build used raw LLD 23.1.3 without a local platform-argument rewriter.
The resulting executable is ARM64 Mach-O with LC_BUILD_VERSION platform iossimulator, SDK 27.1, minimum OS 17.0, and linker version 23.1.3. Bundle metadata reports iPhoneSimulator and iphonesimulator27.1.
This validates compilation, linking, and bundle metadata. The app has not been executed in Apple's Simulator.
@kabiroberai, would you mind taking a look at this? It extends the Darwin SDK and SwiftBuild support to tvOS, macOS, and Catalyst. If someone else owns this area now, happy to redirect.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The newly advertised Catalyst Swift SDK targets add iOSSupport header and library paths but no iOSSupport framework search path. A consumer that uses the generated Swift SDK without xtool's separate BuildSettings flags may be unable to resolve Catalyst frameworks.
Compilation fails to find the framework or its Swift module despite the SDK advertising the Catalyst target.
This can occur when: A package built directly with the generated Swift SDK for arm64-apple-ios-macabi imports UIKit.
